IOWA HEALTH FREEDOM COALITION

MAY 5, 2008

Here is a quick re-cap of our legislative efforts for the 08 session:  we were able to get the Iowa Access to Wellness Act introduced in both the House and Senate (HF2409 and SF2168, copies are available on our website:  http://www.iowahealthfreedom.org/LegislationHP.html ).

The Senate Committee made it clear that the Senate bill would not proceed further without some sort of registration language.  The Iowa Health Freedom Coalition agrees completely with the National position that registration language is unacceptable in health freedom legislation.

Our House sponsors were prepared to move the House version of the bill from sub-committee to the full committee; though it is fair to say that the legislators were very involved in budget bills this session and our House bill would not likely have made it any further.  Under the circumstances, we thanked our House sponsors for their support but we would not be expending further efforts to pass the bills.

It has become increasingly clear that absent a compelling reason, the Iowa Legislature is unlikely to bring a health freedom bill to the floor for a vote.  Since grassroots support communicated to state representatives is one compelling reason we can bring about, the IHFC will be concentrating efforts in that direction.

This spring we have had exhibits at Day at the Capitol, the Iowa Holistic Expo, the Iowa Natural Living Expo, and we are invited to be at the Iowa Psychic Fair in June.  In addition, Larry Hanus was interviewed for a segment on Iowa Public Television on nutritional supplement use in Iowa (and the current Iowa law in that regard).  Individually, our Board and Executive Committee members have been actively educating practitioners and the public about the benefits of health freedom legislation.

Many of us in the IHFC have remarked that it feels like there is a shift in attitude among practitioners and our clients; that it really is time to take this issue seriously in Iowa AND people are starting to be willing to do something about it.  Once a critical mass of constituents make their views and desires known to their legislators, the change will come.

Thanks so much for your continuing support!

 Best Things,

Kathryn Lappegard

Coalition is the face of health freedom at the Iowa capitol.   2009 finds them introducing a safe harbor exemption bill HF855, working on mercury free vaccine legislation, and working on protection of children from Teen Screening. Sadly, the Chairman of the Health and Human Services committee in the House refused to give the safe harbor bill a hearing,
blocking it from Committee discussions and votes. The bill would exempt unlicensed practitioners such as herbalists, traditional naturopaths, homeopaths, and many natural health care providers from existing law of criminal charges of practicing medicine without a license. Freedom advocates continue to educate and teach Iowa legislators the power and common sense solution that a safeharbor would be for Iowa consumers and natural health care practitioners.

Iowa Dentist, Larry Hanus, who had his license removed by the Iowa Dental Board for telling people that mercury fillings were toxic 15 years ago, was successful at getting his dental license reinstated. Congratulations to Dr. Hanus for his persistence for health freedom and on behalf of consumers of Iowa. The Hanus opinion has been nationally noted and will contribute to the freeing up of many dentists who have been harassed for practicing mercury free dentistry.
